Greenway Modern School organized a Capacity Building Programme on “Gender Sensitivity” by CBSE in the school auditorium on 13 February 2024. The objective of this one-day session was to get an in-depth understanding of what gender sensitization is and the need for building awareness around gender equality.

The session was hosted by Dr. Nivedita and Ms. Rajni, the exponents in the field of Academy and Training sessions. The session started by introducing the speaker Dr. Nivedita Naithani, Innovation Head of Venkateshwar International School and the recipient of the Best Mentor Award from CBSE nationally. She is a certified Global and National AIEF Resource person.

Ms. Rajni Ashat worked as a scientist at Sri Ram Institute. She served DAV School as the Principal for twenty-seven years. She is awarded by the Human Rights Commission for her service in the field of education and she is also awarded Shiksha Ratna by the Governor of Haryana.

Dr. Nivedita started her presentation by listing the session’s objectives. She briefly explained the purpose and significance of gender sensitivity before leading an activity to help all the teachers become aware of the misconceptions and prejudice about gender. She advanced the conversation by describing the difference between gender and sex and the significance of gender equality in all spheres of human existence. A short video was shown on mental health which left everyone with a cue of questions and their hunt for the most appropriate solutions. She continued by outlining how people are required to act, speak, dress, groom, and even conduct themselves according to the gender allocated to them by society.

She emphasized how stereotyped ideas still prevail in society and what are the benefits of gender equality. She gave a reality check through a hand-out on how people behave in specific ways that are considered apparent truths and thus are practiced unconsciously. She, through various examples, discussed the connection between masculinity and gender sensitivity and the need for the eradication of gender-based violence. Ms. Rajni continued the lecture by involving all the attendees in various activities to strengthen their comprehension of the various terms of gender sensitivity. The session was concluded by Ms. Jaishree, the Activity Charge by giving a vote of thanks to the speakers. The workshop served as an eye-opening session for all and helped them understand and respect all genders irrespective of their sexual orientation. It insisted on the relevance of the ‘Law of Acceptance’.

Basant Panchami, also known as Vasant Panchami, marks the arrival of spring in India and is celebrated with great fervor and joy. Through this festival, Greenway Nursery School introduced children to Indian culture, traditions, and the significance of seasons in a fun and educational way.  The celebration began with the decoration of the school with vibrant colors, flowers, and traditional motifs like rangoli. Yellow, the color of spring and Basant Panchami, dominated the décor, creating a festive ambiance.  Children and teachers dressed in bright yellow attire, symbolizing the blossoming of nature and the onset of spring.  A key aspect of Basant Panchami is the worship of Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, music, and arts. A small puja (prayer) was conducted, where children offered flowers, incense, and sweets to the goddess, accompanied by chanting of mantras and devotional songs.  They were given a pencil each along with some Prasad.    Teachers narrated stories related to Basant Panchami, emphasizing its cultural significance and legends associated with Goddess Saraswati and Lord Vishnu. This engaged the children and helped them understand the traditions behind the festival.  Basant Panchami celebration in school offered a holistic learning experience, combining cultural immersion, creativity, and environmental awareness. Through activities, rituals, and storytelling, children not only celebrated the festival but also gained a deeper understanding of their cultural heritage and the significance of nature in our lives. It fostered a sense of community and appreciation for traditions, making Basant Panchami a memorable and enriching experience for young learners.
